EMAC and a Career in Advertising

Next year Katie Haag will become one of our first undergrads to complete the EMAC degree program. One of the questions parents most frequently ask us is, “What do you do with an EMAC degree?” The answer to that question, is “A lot.” But, Katie represents one path our students are taking. Although she still has a couple of semesters left she has already turned an internship with a Dallas advertising firm into a full time job. The following are Katie’s thoughts on her new job and being an EMAC major.

When transferring to The University of Texas at Dallas’ Emerging Media and Communication program, I came expecting a refreshing degree plan that would provide challenge and spur creativity.  What I have experienced in just several months far exceeds all initial expectations, as the EMAC program has given me an entire new outlook on the future of communication and equipped me with the necessary skills to develop a presence in the world of new media.  The courses in this program allow for intellectual exploration—where “out-of-the-box” artistry is welcomed, encouraged and supported.

Through the EMAC program, I received a rare internship opportunity at one of the best integrated marketing agencies in the nation, Moroch Partners.  Working with their top-ranked public relations team, Moroch | PR, I assist in coordinating new business strategies, developing proposal plans and implementing traditional and digital media tactics for various clients nationwide.  Here, I have the opportunity to brainstorm, share ideas, and contribute research to real world clientele.

Moroch | PR differs from other competing firms, largely due to their social media adaptation.  The public relations team works tirelessly to develop clients’ voices in their respective communities, monitoring brand reputation to establish presence on a widely misunderstood media platform.  Brands understand the importance of consumer engagement and look to our team of “social media experts” to utilize the medium and promote positive brand recall.

The best part about my job?  I am treated as an equal among the industry’s top intellectuals, working each day surrounded by a team of inspiring professionals who look to each other for encouragement and creative support.  Just six months ago, entering the professional world would have felt terrifying and unreachable.  I am now employed at one of the most respected, innovative agencies in the country, working alongside influential team members that push me to grow personally and professionally.

EMAC, defined as “a degree program which focuses on the uses, impact, and implications of digital networked technology on media and culture”, actually serves as something much deeper.  The courses, the professors, and fellow students have inspired me to conquer my goals, instilling confidence and fearlessness.  I could not ask for a more rewarding experience.

Spring Break Roundup

Joe DentonMy name is Joe Denton, and I am a student of Emerging Media and Communication (EMAC) here at the University of Texas at Dallas. My hobbies include photography, web design, and internet/mobile technologies, to be vague.

Campus was pretty quiet over spring break, which gave me a great opportunity to take some photographs. There are more to be found on Flickr or UTDallas’s Facebook, but here’s a roundup of some of the finer point on campus:

The pools in the apartment phases are high quality, and often overlooked.

I was surprised to find the basketball courts not empty over break.

The ATEC building and communications tower.

The ATEC building entrance, nearly totally void of cars/life.

One cool aspect of UTDallas is the Spirit Rocks in the middle of campus.

These rocks can be painted by anyone, at any time.

Again, this is just a small roundup of campus pictures, and there are plenty more on Flickr. Check them out!
